Oregon is in a Crisis
Our Oregon State government is bloated and out of control. Partisan politics have worsened the situation. The body, the citizens, is suffering and people are angry. I understand and, with your help, I would like to slowly help the legislature to do some serious purging and elimination of waste and redundancy. I can't possibly discuss all of the important issues on this page. I will continue to explore alternatives to challenges that lay ahead of Oregon in my blog.
For years the people in HD23 have been dealing with increasing traffic between their communities and I5. The Salem congestion has only become worse. People are having a difficult time getting to their jobs or getting products to market. It is time to reconsider solutions such as a third bridge. This will be expensive but the damage to the economics is, in the long term, even more costly.
When I was young my family lost everything because of a family medical emergency that drained their finances. I understand the need for health care for all. Health care is a right, not a privilege. The current administration and delivery of care is wasteful and too bureaucratic. Adding more taxes to the delivery side just gets costs passed on to the patients. This is not an easy fix. I will work with others at the capitol to find solutions.
Budgets! Believe it or not, I love to dig in to numbers and trace the flow of funds. It is not easy. Numbers are used as tools to support a position. They can be easily manipulated. As a former auditor I know the power of accounting. Oregon State's budget is huge and trails sometimes are circular. I will always question the numbers.
There are many "hidden" taxes within our state budget. Corporations and small businesses are smothered in fees. Some businesses are forced out of business or must leave the state to remain profitable. This trend must stop.
I grew up on a cattle ranch and I am currently a member of a farming family. I stand strong for personal liberty and property rights.
Agriculture is the life blood of most of Oregon. This is particularly true in HD23. We need good representation in Salem. Environmental and land use concerns make it hard to use farmland for farming. It is fine line between preserving land for farming and encouraging commercial enterprises or multiple dwellings on the farm.
Let me start this discussion by declaring up front that I love our immigrant neighbors. That is my bias.
We should be working on ways to help hard working undocumented workers have a path to citizenship. They play a key role in our economy. Our vineyards need them. Our vegetable and nursery farmers need them. They are honorable, skilled people who need to feel safe.
I support Oregon being a sanctuary state. I support the DACA young people who are already integrated in to our economy. We will all lose if they leave.
I support the 2nd amendment right to bear arms. I will always support your rights to bear arms. The vast majority of gun owners are responsible people.
I do, however, support the recent law, SB 719A, which allows police, or a member of a subject’s family or household, to file a petition with the court which could lead to an order prohibiting firearms possession if it is believed they pose an imminent risk to themselves or others.
If you are not a threat to others, or to yourself, then this law should not concern you. If, however, you are a violent person and you are threatening others then I support having your gun removed.
I encourage you to speak up and let your legislators know what you think about all of these key issues. Please let me know by sending me an email. Thank you!
